Common questions about VSME sustainability reporting

What is the VSME standard?

VSME is the Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs, developed by EFRAG for non-listed companies with fewer than 250 employees. It is aligned with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and covers the same environmental, social and governance topics, scaled to the size and capacity of smaller businesses. As part of the Omnibus I and II directives the EU Commission recommended that voluntary reporting for companies with up to 1,000 employees should be based on the VSME standard.

Why do companies choose to report under VSME?

Because it turns sustainability work into something visible and credible — strengthening reputation, helping win business, and improving access to finance. Reporting against one recognised standard also makes a company’s data easy for customers, partners and investors to understand and compare.

Is VSME reporting mandatory?

No — VSME is voluntary. Companies adopt it because it is a recognised, proportionate way to document their sustainability efforts and share them with confidence. It is the standard the European Commission recommends for smaller companies that want to report.

Does the Surveyxact concept include a double materiality assessment?

No. A double materiality assessment is not part of the VSME standard. Instead, VSME disclosures are organised into “may”, “shall” and “shall if relevant” categories, and the Surveyxact template guides you through the disclosures that apply to your business.

Can I collect ESG data from my suppliers?

Yes. The concept supports collecting VSME data from external stakeholders such as suppliers and partners — useful for CSRD-covered companies gathering value-chain data, or for any business building a fuller sustainability picture.
